ISO MYTHS & WHAT
GOOD LOOKS LIKE
- Myth: a good ISO rating means we’re covered.
ISO measures capability and distribution on paper. It doesn’t guarantee turnout time, overnight and weekend staffing, or arrival at your specific address when it counts.
- Myth: the rating reflects our actual response.
Ratings can lag reality by years and don’t capture declining volunteer availability, limited daytime staffing, or growth that has outrun coverage.
- Myth: distance to the station doesn’t matter much.
ISO’s own model credits engine coverage within about 1.5 road miles. Beyond that, travel time climbs quickly against a fire that doubles every 30 to 60 seconds.
- What good actually looks like:
Consistent turnout, reliable staffing around the clock, measured arrival times, an effective response force that assembles fast, and an honest read on the gap between paper capability and real readiness.
MEASURE READINESS, NOT JUST RATING
EVALUATE YOUR DEPARTMENT · OR TRY THE BENCHMARK
Two ways in: a full department evaluation for leaders, or the softer “what good looks like” benchmark for HOAs and developers comparing current protection against ISO-grounded standards.
